For the last couple of days I've been playing around on Google's new social networking site, Google+ and I have to say, I'm liking it a lot. Right now my favorite features are the instant photo upload from my Android phone and the way you organize everyone into circles. Some people might be in multiple circles, say, friends, family, writers, poets. Some might be in one all their own, like techies. You can choose to send your post out to everyone at once or just select circles. Another plus is that you can also post something and include someone via email.

Hangouts are a cool integrated video chat that worked great for me.

The UI is clean and intuitive. I think you have more privacy controls than on Facebook.

Right now it's a small population but I think it will keep on growing, especially when Google formally opens the doors. For now, if you have a Google profile set up and you want to come play, send me your Google email address and I can open a door.

Oh, and they also have a vanity url. I grabbed mine right away.

Would love to check this out (even though part of me is reluctant to have yet another social media site) But if you have a spare invite, I'd love to visit - kmessner908@gmail.com - thanks for the report!

Hey Kate, I just sent one. What happens is you should get an email copy of a post I just made and you should be able to click on the link from there.

I'd like to try ...
You know I'm not much for using Facebook (or maybe you don't -- can't remember if we're friends there). Certainly one of my discomforts with Facebook is the notion that everyone in my friends list would see everything I post. It seems polite to accept most every friend request, but it doesn't mean I have the same level of friendship with everyone on my friends list. So Circles seems like a great idea.

Anyway, apparently Google Apps once again does not support the newest product, so I can't use my main email account for Google+. I'll email you from a different account, and perhaps you could send me an invite? Thanks!

Re: I'd like to try ...
Hey Shirley! I just added your email to a recent post so you should get a copy of a post that, when you read it, will ask if you want to learn more/join Google+

If you want me to try it with your other email Gmail instead, send me that one.

The circles really give you a lot of control over what you share with whom.

I jumped on it today & added you as a friend in minutes!

Now...how do I get that spiffy vanity url you mentioned?

Yay! Glad to see you over there.

Here's where I got the vanity url:

Re: Vanity URL?
It was in my stream. I don't remember from who.

Who am I?I was born on the Cancer/Leo cusp and share a birthday with Ernest Hemingway and Robin Williams. The similarities don't stop there as I can go from depressed to ecstatic without ever passing go. I feel scared most of the time though my friends call me brave and I find it easier to believe in my friends than to believe in my own abilities to make what I want out of my life.

Who am I? A wife, a mother, a daughter, and even, gulp, a grandmother.

Who am I? A writer who never gets tired of playing with words, even when the words are hard to find. A writer of books for children and articles for grown-ups and many things in-between.

Who am I? A motivational speaker, writing instructor, workshop leader and full-time follower of dreams.

Who am I? Read and find out.

"Successful writers are not the ones who write the best sentences. They are the ones who keep writing. They are the ones who discover what is most important and strangest and most pleasurable in themselves, and keep believing in the value of their work, despite the difficulties."
--Bonnie Friedman

"As writers, we must be willing to feel our sadness, our anger, our terror, so we can reach in and find our sweet vulnerability that is just sitting there waiting for us to come back home."
--Nancy Slonim Aronie

"Writers write about what obsesses them. You draw those cards. I lost my mother when I was 14. My daughter died at the age of 6. I lost my faith as a Catholic. When I'm writing, the darkness is always there. I go where the pain is."
--Anne Rice
